But I see myself as an actor muchmore as a tool – in the very best sense. For me, it’s totally exciting to try out differentgenres and acting styles. Because I don’t tell the stories of the films I act in from thepoint of view of the recipient. If I only made films that I would want to see as a viewer,I would probably make a film every three years.So you see yourself more as a craftsman than as an artist?Exactly. I don’t see myself as an art-bearing figure who aspires to reach the greatestheights of art in everything he does. I’m an actor, that’s my job, I’ve done good filmsand bad ones too. But that’s secondary for me. Working on the character, the experience,making the film as such – that’s what’s important to me. And I do that with allmy conviction and with all my heart. Whether it is ultimately successful is relativelyunimportant to me. The comparison with craftsmanship is only misleading in onerespect: it is easier to draw quality boundaries there than in acting.Can a bad actor muddle through better?Maybe not a bad one, but a mediocre one. However, no one is always good either.How do you become good?Above all, it takes a huge amount of willpower, especially in the film industry. Intheatre, the motivation of the actors is certainly somewhat different. But basically,willpower is at least as important as talent.Are there roles that have particularly challenged you?Of course there are films that are harder for you than others. But the question is always:was it the film? Or the story? Or the way you deal with the character? Or maybeyou just had an idiot for a director? That happens too. But that’s also the great thingabout the job: you never get to the point where you read a scene and think, ‘I’ve seenthis a million times before.’ It’s a constant new challenge.And the opposite of routine?As an actor, you can never really achieve a routine – and if you do, it’s probably unhealthy.Instead, you’re always standing in front of a blank sheet of paper. Becauseyou have to say this sentence as if you’d never said it before.Geschichte überschaubar ist, ebenso die Länge, und das Ganze irgendwie einEnde hat. Ähnlich geht‘s mir auch mit der Arbeit. Filme sind meine große Liebe– und Kino war für mich immer der schönste Raum, um diesen Beruf stattfindenzu lassen.Mögen Sie ein bestimmtes Genre besonders?Eigentlich nicht. Ich fühle mich in allem irgendwie wohl. Aber ich verstehe michals Schauspieler viel eher als Werkzeug – im allerbesten Sinne. Für mich ist estotal spannend, verschiedene Genres und Spielstile auszuprobieren. Denn die Filme,in denen ich spiele, erzähle ich ja nicht aus der Sicht des Rezipienten. Würdeich nur Filme machen, die ich als Zuschauer sehen möchte, käme ich vermutlichauf einen Film alle drei Jahre.Sie empfinden sich also eher als Handwerker statt als Künstler?Genau. Ich sehe mich nicht als kunsttragende Figur, die in allem, was sie tut, denAnspruch hat, die größten Höhen der Kunst zu erreichen. Ich bin Schauspieler,das ist mein Beruf, ich habe gute Filme gemacht und auch schlechte. Aber das istfür mich sekundär. Die Arbeit an der Figur, das Erleben, das Machen des Films alssolches – das alles ist für mich entscheidend. Und das mache ich mit all meinerÜberzeugung und mit ganzem Herzen. Ob das am Ende erfolgreich wird, ist mirrelativ egal. Nur in einer Beziehung hinkt der Vergleich zum Handwerk: Dort ist eseinfacher, Qualitätsgrenzen zu ziehen, als bei der Schauspielerei.Kann sich ein schlechter Schauspieler besser durchmogeln?Vielleicht kein schlechter, aber ein mittelmäßiger. Jedoch ist auch niemand immernur gut.Wie wird man denn gut?Dazu braucht es vor allem eine Riesenportion Willen, gerade im Filmbereich.Im Theater ist die Motivation der Schauspieler sicher etwas anders gelagert. Abergrundsätzlich ist Willen mindestens genauso wichtig wie Talent.Gibt es Rollen, die Sie besonders herausgefordert haben?Es gibt natürlich Filme, die dir schwerer fallen als andere. Aber da stellen sichimmer die Fragen: Lag das am Film? Oder an der Geschichte? Oder an der Aus-T-Shirt vonTODS26
