GASTGESPRÄCHAnd in Hollywood?While filming with M. Night Shyamalan, I saw the cameraman faint because wehad been shooting all day in the sweltering heat. There was a so-called ‘runninglunch,’ where you quickly grab something to eat during filming instead of sittingdown to eat. Everyone went along with it; after all, the overtime was paid. That’swhen I realised: OK, that’s my limit, I’m not doing this film.You have now appeared in over 50 productions, including dramas, historicalfilms, thrillers and even a western. You rarely do comedies, though. Yet TheGuardian described you as having a ‘delicious sense of comedy’...I find it easy to laugh at myself. Maybe that’s why I’m quite good at dramas? If youdon’t take yourself too seriously, you can let go more easily and become someoneelse. Last year in particular, I really exhausted myself, and now I just can’t do itanymore. Instead, I want toshoot at least two comediesthis year!Your comedic talent is alsoevident on Instagram (@vickykrieps). There’s a postwhere you sing the lyrics ‘I’ma Krieps, I’m a weirdo’ to theRadiohead song ‘Creep.’ Areyou a ‘weirdo’?Yes, I am. I think being a weirdogives you a much betterhand in life. It’s like being inthe famous shadow, which isactually the best place to be.Ideally, you manage to growas much as possible in theshadows before stepping intothe light.You shaved your head awhile ago. How did thatcome about?Like so many women, I alwaystoyed with the idea. But I usedto worry that I wouldn’t getany more roles if I was bald.Today, I don’t care. Then camethis film adaptation of ‘LoveMe Tender,’ an incredible bookby Constance Debré. At the endof the story, the protagonistClémence shaves her hair off.Was that liberating?For me, it was like a stark encounterwith myself. Suddenly,it’s just you, completely pure.But I liked it so much that Ikept cutting my hair back.You hardly wear any makeup.Do you think it’s easierfor people in your professionto be at peace with theirappearance?I know a lot of actors who havea huge problem with it andComplete Lookvon ArmaniOhrringe vonOle Lynggaardcan hardly breathe because they think so much about how they look. And that gets inthe way of their acting, which is incredibly embarrassing for everyone involved.And how do you deal with that?At some point, I made a conscious decision to stop wasting my time thinking aboutmy appearance. Life is short and it only goes in one direction. You can’t win, so youhave to free yourself from it.How did you manage that?I didn’t look in the mirror for two weeks, as a kind of exercise: how do I perceive my-Paul Thomas Anderson, M. Night Shyamalan, Roland Emmerich, Barry Levinson,Margarethe von Trotta, Jim Jarmusch … Sie haben schon mit etlichengroßen Filmemachern gearbeitet. Wer hat sie am meisten gefordert?Am schwierigsten war es definitiv mit meiner letzten Regisseurin in Japan. Siemacht wunderschöne, spirituelle Filme. Doch sie hat sehr hierarchisch gearbeitet,was wohl an den sozialen und kulturellen Strukturen in Japan liegt. Es war ganzkomisch und hatte sowas Sektenhaftes. Damit kann ich nicht umgehen.Und in Hollywood?Beim Dreh mit M. Night Shyamalan bekam ich mit, wie der Kameramann in Ohnmachtfiel, weil wir den ganzen Tag in brütender Hitze durchgedreht hatten. Esgab einen sogenannten „Running Lunch“, bei dem man sich während des Drehsschnell was reinschiebt, statt sich zum Essen hinzusetzen. Alle machten das mit,schließlich wurden die Überstundenbezahlt. Da habe ichgemerkt: Okay, da ist meineGrenze, dann machen wir vonmir aus keinen Film.Mittlerweile haben Sie in über50 Produktionen mitgewirkt,Dramen, Historienfilme,Thriller, sogar ein Western.Nur Komödien drehen Sie selten.Dabei bescheinigte IhnenThe Guardian einen „delicioussense of comedy.“ …Mir fällt es leicht, über michselbst zu lachen. Vielleicht binich deshalb in Dramen ganzgut? Wer sich selbst nicht soernst nimmt, kann eher loslassenund jemand andereswerden. Vor allem letztes Jahrhabe ich mich noch einmal sorichtig verausgabt, jetzt kannich einfach nicht mehr. Das ist wie mit demberühmten Schatten, dereigentlich der beste Platz ist.Idealerweise schaffst du es,so viel wie möglich im Schattenzu wachsen, bevor du insLicht gehst.Sie haben sich vor einigerZeit den Kopf rasiert. Wiekam das?Wie so viele Frauen habe ich immer damit geliebäugelt. Aber früher hatte ichSorge, dass ich mit Glatze keine Rollen mehr bekommen würde. Heute ist mir dasegal. Dann kam diese Film-Adaption von „Love Me Tender“, ein unglaublichesBuch von Constance Debré. Am Ende der Geschichte rasiert sie sich die ProtagonistinClémence die Haare ab.Hatte das etwas Befreiendes?Für mich war es wie eine krasse Begegnung mit mir selbst.
