A full eleven years after his last studio album,the British-born artist, who has lived in the USA for more than forty years,has hit the road again. ‘Dream Into It’ is the name of Idol’s new work, which wasreleased in the spring, and of course his best man Steve Stevens is back on guitar,there are lots of strong melodies and pleasant noise. And some of the songs, suchas ‘Still Dancing’, sound as if they have been catapulted straight from the eightiesinto the here and now. On 27 June, he will be performing at Königsplatz in Munich- and will be joined by guitarist Stevens and his worldwide hits such as ‘RebelYell’, ‘Eyes Without A Face’ and ‘White Wedding’. We spoke to the punk-poprocker shortly before his visit to the Bavarian capital - and the Bayerischer Hof -via video call directly to his living room in Los Angeles. There, the grandfather ofseveral children sits on a plush sofa. Has the alt-punk become bourgeois after all?Your latest album seems like an autobiography set to music ...Yes, absolutely. I’m 69 years old, I’ve been doing this job for almosthalf a century. The perspective I have on my whole life is different.I think more about the past today than I used to and nowtake a closer look at the landscape of the life I’ve lived.Is that just down to getting older?That is certainly a factor, but the corona years have also made me more nostalgicand a little more willing to remember the past. Then there’s the work on the concertdocumentary ‘Billy Idol: State Line - Live At Hover Dam’, which came out in 2023and where I consciously dealt with the past in order to sort and categorise it.You will be 70 years old on 30 November. How does that make you feel?(hesitates) Okay.Okay? So not particularly good?Oh, I don’t know. I’m pushing the topic away from me a bit. Sure, the occasion is areason to celebrate. Also because in my young and wild years, those days of drugsand recklessness and escapades, I would never have thought I’d get anywhere nearthis old. Now the number is suddenly looming over me and it feels somehow burdensome.It’s as if I’m not yet ready to turn 70.Im November wird er 70, aber Billy Idol hat noch jede Menge Energie im Tank. Satteelf Jahre nach seinem letzten Studioalbum hat der gebürtige Brite, der seit mehr alsvierzig Jahren in den USA lebt, noch mal einen rausgehauen. „Dream Into It“ heißtIdols neues Werk, das im Frühjahr erschienen ist, natürlich ist auch wieder seinbester Mann Steve Stevens an der Gitarre mit am Start, es gibt viele starke Melodienund angenehmen Krach. Und so einige der Lieder, etwa „Still Dancing“ klingen,als seien sie direkt aus den Achtzigern ins Hier und Heute katapultiert worden. Am27. Dazukommt noch die Arbeit an der Konzertdokumentation „Billy Idol: State Line – LiveAt Hover Dam“, die 2023 rauskam und bei der ich mich bewusst mit Vergangenembeschäftigte, um es zu sortieren und einzuordnen.Sie werden am 30. November 70 Jahre alt. Wie fühlen Sie sich bei dem Gedanken?(zögert) Okay.Okay? Also nicht besonders gut?Ach, ich weiß nicht. Ich schiebe das Thema so ein bisschen von mir weg. Sicher,der Anlass ist ein Grund zum Feiern. Auch deshalb, weil ich in meinen jungenund wilden Jahren, jener Zeit der Drogen, und der Rücksichtslosigkeit und der44 45
